Mostar & Emporia: Simply Divine

Mostar is one of the most beautiful cities in Bosnia and Herzegovina, situated on the banks of the Neretva River in the heart of Herzegovina. It was named after the bridge keepers – mostari. Its greatest attraction is the iconic Old Bridge (Stari most), which was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2005, together with the historic centre of Mostar. Built in 1566 at the order of Suleiman the Magnificent, it connects two parts of the city. The original bridge was destroyed in 1993 during the war but was later reconstructed, using the original stones recovered from the river.

This beautiful stone giant attracts numerous tourists who come to admire this feat of architecture and eagerly await the famous bridge jumping events that take place all throughout the summer. While visiting the most famous and the busiest street in town – Kujundžiluk – you will be reminded of parts of Istanbul, where souvenirs such as cezve and various other Turkish coffee pots are in abundance. Sparkling jewellery and colourful scarves, along with the spectacular view of the river and the old bridge, will add to your experience.

Visiting Mostar and not trying some of the traditional Bosnian specialties would be a huge mistake. Don't miss out on the cherished tradition of sipping local Turkish coffee, also known as meračenje, and definitely try some oriental delicacies such as the Baklava or Turkish Delight – Lokum. There's more to what Mostar has to offer. Come and take a step back in time, but bear one thing in mind… if you're visiting in summer, put on a pair of light trainers because flip-flops won't do it.
